Technology: Friend or foe

The question about advantages of technology is not applicable to discuss if the technology itself become a threat of human kind. We usually think about the positive aspect of technology without weighing the negative aspect as well.

Technology may ease many of our complicated life and made it look simple. But, sometimes, simple things do has complicated interpretation. Take it from statistical aspect. Calculating some of the equations for statistical purposes maybe difficult as it need us to calculate at multiple levels. Some of the methods need us to power the number, or squared root the number or maybe add up about hundreds of numbers. But, by using technology especially computer software, all of the calculation can be done by just a click. Even charts and graphs can be display after the calculation is done via graphs and charts interfere. The software will make our calculation much easier and it will also ensure us that we do not make any mistake while doing it. The downturn is the jargon of "garbage in garbage out." Yes people can keep in all of the data and run it to get result but if one does it without knowing the fundamental of statistic, his or her result maybe invalid or "rubbish." The person may not know what is he/she doing and end up with false report. Thus, technology does make our life easy but some of the fundamental knowledge may be gone if we are too preoccupied in using it.

Some of the great thing about technology is it can multiple your capacity if you really want it. For example, a manufacturing industry may benefit technology by increasing the product that can be manufacture in a time. If a labor can only finished up ten products per day, by using machine, the capacity will be double or even triple. Therefore, technology might increase productivity of a company or firm. Adding along, profit margin will also increase and it will make a lot of entrepreneur happy. However, because of the production of goods are made by using a machine, then the role of a worker will fall resulting the management may limited the quota for existing jobs. This will result in unemployment and will also affect the economy at micro level. People will lose their job and end up unemployed. The people will felt the burden particularly at the urban area or at big city. The search for a workplace will end up harder and harder as the people need to fulfill their responsibility to their family and themselves.

As for a conclusion, it is up to the top management and in case of a country; it is up to the government to implement wisely technology in each and every field. There is so much benefit when we apply technological method in our life but the dependency to technology is also an issue that we need to take note. Sometimes, technology makes life easy but other time it may make us miserable. Imagine a library that uses online system for database and method of borrowing/retrieving books and on a very unlucky day, there is a problem in their internet system. Customers who want to search, borrow or return books to the library will disappointed because they cannot do so just because the hanging of the "net."
